The surname Baseggio refers directly to the noble families of Venice (Serenissima Repubblica). The presence of Venetian nobles in Naxos was established with the establishment of the Duchy of the Aegean Sea by Marco Sanudo in 1207, during the Frankish period. The Venetian feudal lords settled on the island, building fortified towers and mansions both in the Chora and in the fertile inland estates, for defense against piracy and the organization of agricultural production.
Although the Bazaios Tower was built later, around 1600 (with some sources mentioning 1671), initially joining the tower monasteries of Naxos as the Monastery of the Holy Cross, the Bazaios family adopted and continued this very tradition of the island’s lords.
The modern history of the Bazaios House and its greatest contribution to the culture of Naxos is directly linked to the current descendant of the family, Georgios Marios Bazaios.
Fully realizing the historical value and architectural significance of the building, Marios Bazaios undertook the difficult task of restoring it. In 2000, the first phase of the work was completed, exclusively with private funds, with the aim not only of preserving, but also of actively integrating the Tower into the modern life of the island.
